The monastic community that Augustine created was meant to imitate the manner and rule of the holy apostles. Its principal rule was that no man should have possessions of his own, but rather all things should be communal and distributed to each according to his need.

Augustine preached to the Catholics of Hippo between 391 and 396. He was an engaging speaker and his lively sermons, full of wit, pun, and wordplay, were very popular. They did, however, draw some criticism from those who felt that Augustine was pandering to the uncivilized mob, rather than raising them up.
